So many layouts....
I am dithering over another sample for Houston. For quite a while I have added to these blocks from time to time. I always demonstrate the technique in these hot colours, and the blocks have built up.
The class is called Shimmering Triangles, and you make very quick triangle sets, turn them into one of a dozen possible blocks that shimmer, and then place the blocks in the colour order you choose.
Any block that emulates, even vaguely, a half square triangle, can be placed in any of the log cabin layouts. for days I have been turning and changing blocks downstairs and trying to work out how I might sew this piece together. I will not quilt it as tops are lighter to carry - but I would like to stitch it before I go.
So here are the choices.
The simple, all pointing the same way, option.
I was turning alternate rows and while it is not my favourite, I thought the hooks looked quite interesting.
This is the log cabin layout usually called Barn Raising.
Zigzags - I am leaning this way at the moment.
Alternating light/dark squares on point. I have another sample in this setting, with a different block so do not think I will use it - but I do like this look.
Another possibility - Zigzags with an occasional square.
There is one other option. I have not tried it yet but I will try the zigzags with some huge flower blocks tucked in here and there - they are also oranges and reds. You will have to wait for this one as I am off to teach a class!

Zig zag with occasional square, but I would move the position of the squares so there are not three rows together with a clearly defined diagonal of squares.
No. 5 & 6 (the last two) are definate favourites for me - I really like the interest that is created in these two.
I'm going to be boring and go for the barn-raising layout. I say boring because it's a very popular layout and really common, but that's probably because it's so effective and looks fabulous!
Zig zag with occasional square works best for me - I like the 'surprise'
Zig zag with a square appeals to me as well, love the colours, summons up the warmth of summer round the corner
I like the barn raising version and the one that creates the small squares on point- I love the gradations of color that you chose- they all are beautiful.
I will look forward to see which layout you choose.

I like the simple first option. Now I think we've all chosen a different preference, I guess you really can't go wrong!
I like the zig zag with the occasional square but like paddysdaughter I would split up the squares. Glorious colours.
the zig zag or the last one are very exciting. the last one has many things going on that takes me in and moves me around... I like that. it's surprising and unexpected...
I thought it was number one, until I saw number 5....Your new one sounds as tempting as the "special" on the TV program "House in the Country"

Barnraising is my favourite, because I am very partial to Log Cabin and the Zigzag is also stunning. Good luck Jenny I will keep a closer eye on you blog.
I realy like the second layout, even though it is not one you said you favour, I like it as it gives such a different effect.
Jenny, I love the idea of tucking in large flower blocks-your mystery suggestion- in combination with the zig zag setting. I love the movement and excitement in zig zags whether simple or complex...can't wait to decide which you will do. BTW the colour scheme is right up my alley!
Hi Jen, I'd like to see an odd hook thrown into the Zigzag with the occasional square :) I feel it would make the eye look again as opposed to a predictable layout of either a straight zigzag or logcabin etc. A lot would depend on the overall size of the top as to whether the occassional squares and hooks would appear crowded or float with the top size. Hey the colours look fabulous anyway.

Second last for me - squares on point. It seems to sit more comfortably than the others.
Zig zag with an occasional square wins for me but it was a hard choice as I liked them all.
All are lovely, but in my traditional, boring fashion I go with option 1. Maybe barn raising as a second choice :-))

I would be interested in seeing the flower idea. It might help some people get an idea of how to begin to step outside the "that's the way we always did it" box.:)

I like the zigzag with the occasional square, or the hooks. I like the 'interest' they create.
Jenny, The layout that shimmers the most is the first one. Because the direction is changed in the others, they seem to break the shimmer effect, and you get distracted.
I like the 5th one down followed by the 2nd.

For design, I love the alternating light /dark squares, but for simply enjoying the play and movement of colour, I love the first one. :)It really does shimmer.
